Ligature attachment point safety audits
Without specific knowledge and training, many providers find it difficult to judge whether the safety products they have fitted are installed correctly and working properly. Poor or incorrect fitting is common, often with little or no planned preventative maintenance after installation.
Over the last twenty years ligature resistant products have developed at pace, and many early products are now superseded or beyond their useful life.
What the audit covers
Our team of experts provide a detailed safety audit which will:
- Identify and itemise the make and model of reduced ligature equipment fitted
- Examine whether items have been fitted correctly in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions
- Comment on the age and condition of the products fitted
- Report on gaps between fitted products and the substrate they are attached to
- Provide a condition report on all items, including loose furniture
- Identify fittings unsuitable for the population, and state why
- Examine the suitability of the fixings used to mount products
- Examine external and exercise areas for ligature issues and wider safety concerns
Areas examined
Audits typically cover doors including mechanical locks, override systems, removable doorstops, hinges, closures and vision panels; windows, blinds, curtain rails and curtains; radiator covers and heat panels; fitted furniture including beds, wardrobes, tables and seating; lighting, both surface mounted and flush fitted; ensuite doors and frames; sanitary ware including WCs, basins, showers, drain covers, vents and extraction, shower rails, IPS panels and grab rails; washroom fittings; and lines of sight and blind spots.
Audits can include cells and bedrooms, bathrooms and toilets, corridors, day areas, dining rooms, activity rooms, association areas, visitor rooms and consulting rooms.
Types of survey available
Full audit of residential areas. An examination of each room identified, to establish the physical state of the environment including the products fitted and how they are functioning. The audit assists in developing remedial work and in specifying products for refurbishment or upgrade.
Health and safety check. Examines critical areas within a facility, with terms of reference tailored to your needs. This could be prior to commissioning, or as a preventative measure where safety concerns have been raised. Alongside the physical environment we can co-develop terms of reference to triangulate our findings with policy, procedure and staff training, identifying gaps in current practice.
As well as auditing the environment, the report identifies high risk areas of concern to help focus resources, and we are happy to identify suitable products and remedial actions for any issues found.
