Why testing matters
Anti-ligature and vandal resistant claims vary considerably between manufacturers and products, and there is no single industry wide test that applies to every product and application. That is why independent testing and transparent product information matter.
All anti-ligature products should be operated and tested in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions to ensure optimum safety and performance. Most manufacturers recommend a yearly inspection to confirm that products are operating correctly and that fittings and fixings are free from damage.
What affects a load release
On load release products such as curtain rails, the weight at which the system releases depends on several factors:
- The correct installation
- Wear and tear during operation
- The weight, length and drop of the curtains
- The weight at which the curtains or rail release, which differs by client group
- Other obstructions or hazards that may interfere with normal operation
One size does not fit all. The static load at which a rail releases in an adult environment will be greater than in a setting for younger or more vulnerable people. Magnetic systems commonly release between 15kg and 30kg depending on bracket proximity, and will not exceed 40kg. Specially developed fixings release at a lower threshold not exceeding 26kg.
What our testing provides
To give demonstrable proof of the efficiency of installed anti-ligature systems, we provide a certificate and an annual audit and test for rails and ligature resistant equipment, together with a report covering:
- Visual inspection of the whole system
- Load release data in kilograms
- Photographic evidence and a summary of key faults
- Visual inspection of the surrounding area for obstructions that might prevent correct operation
- Identification of any repair or replacement required
We can test and audit any new or existing anti-ligature product, and provide a full fitting and maintenance service.
Independent testing
Where applicable we identify products that have been independently tested under the Ministry of Justice Safer Cell Programme, or by the Building Research Establishment under its Informed Choices programme.
